The MALSR (Medium-Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator) is a voltage power approach system, that combines steady burning flood lamps with flashing lights (strobes) to aid the pilot landing during reduced visibility conditions. It is the US standard for Cat I operations.

Multi Electric developed the first MALS in 1968 and the first MALSR with Flashing Light Intensity Variation under Patent#: 3792309 in 1972. Multi also holds the patent for the monitoring of Flashing Lights under Patent#: 4449073. These innovations in the CAT I Approach Systems, reduced the cost associated with 1/2 mile visibility for medium intensity runways and 1800ft visibility for high intensity runways. Multi has produced over 400 MALSR systems for the FAA and additional systems for use throughout the world. Most of the systems are still operational and require minimum maintenance or downtime. Reliability was a high priority for the start and remains the enginnering goal.

The system coordinates the level of intensity of the flashing lights and the steady burning lights with the runway lights to provide an even transmission from approach to landing. It consists of 45 steady-burning lights with 5 (five) lights per bar and 3 bars at the 1000ft marker. The 5 (five) flashing lights extend the apprach to 2400ft. The threshold is comprised of 18 semi-flush or elevated lights to complete the system. The total power for the system is 15kva and is powered from the electric service. The system can be hard wired to the tower, interfaced with the runway circuit or radio controlled for changing the intensity of the approach system.
